Huskies Fall to Divine Child, 3-1

10/24/07

The Lakeview Huskies  bowed out of the MHSAA Div. 2 Tournament on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 loss to the Dearborn Divine Child Falcons in a Regional Semi-final match held at Trenton High School.

Divine Child took the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half and kept it for the rest of the game despite a persistent threat from the Husky attack. The Falcons would take a 2-0 lead 13 minutes into the second half, but Tom Lambert would give Lakeview  some hope as he made things 2-1, 5 minutes later. But Divine Child would score again 8 minutes from the end of regulation to give the Falcons the win. Divine Child advances to the Regional Final against defending State Champions Dexter on Thursday.

Despite the disappointing loss the Huskies had a very successful campaign finishing the season at 18-3 with a MAC Blue Division title and their third consecutive District Championship.

Congratulations to all of the Lakeview seniors, Brian Mitzel, Drew Wright, Kris Trombley, Steve Sroka, Nico Conti, Greg Norrod, Adam Vorpagel, Brandon Herber, Tom Lambert and Tim Carron. Each one contributed greatly to the Huskies success over the last several years.

Huskies Top Rams, 2-1

10/18/07

It was a battle to the end in the MHSAA District 2-23 semi-final  last night as the Lakeview Huskies needed overtime to finish off the Lamphere Rams, 2-1. The Huskies were in control of the ball throughout most of the game, as they had many chances throughout the first half to take the lead, but it took a goal from Brandon Herber with 3 seconds remaining on the clock to finally give Lakeview the lead at 1-0. Herber jumped on a ball that was bouncing around in the penalty area and made no mistake with his hard shot into the top right corner of the goal.

As the second half got under way it was more of the same as Lakeview kept constant pressure on the Lamphere goal to no avail.  Lamphere kept up a hard fight though and were able to level things at the 13:43 mark with a nice goal from midfielder George Chomakov who had been giving the Huskies problems all game long. Chomakov came very close to putting the Rams ahead as he had another chance soon after with a hard shot from 20 yards that  bounced off the cross bar. Regulation time would end 1-1 however, and it would be two 15 min. overtime periods to decide who goes on to the District Final.

The Huskies regained their composure for the overtime and 6 minutes in it would be Tom Lambert who would give Lakeview the win with a nice finish off a pass from Drew Wright. Lambert had been threatening the Lamphere goal all night and finally made it count when it mattered most.

Defender Andy James and midfielder Greg Norrod turned in solid performances for the  Huskies as well.

Asked after the game why he thought the game was closer than many people thought it would be, Coach Spano had this to say, " Soccer is a little different from other sports in that a team with discipline who makes a decision to defend and sticks with it can make a game very difficult for the attacking team.  They took away a lot of space in the middle and packed in the box to make it hard on us.  Lamphere had a good game plan and when combined with some poor shooting from us and some key saves from their keeper it made for an interesting evening to say the least."

It is now on to the District 2-23 final for Lakeview, as they will face the Titans of Warren Woods Tower in a rematch of last season's district semi-final which the Huskies took 1-0 off of a Brandon Herber header. Tower were 2-1 winners over Lake Shore in the other semi-final game yesterday.

Asked what the keys would be for the Huskies to notch their third straight District Championship, Coach Nick Spano had these words,  " We’ll need to be ready to play against this defensive style again.  We’ll need to do a better job of using the width to generate crosses and then getting some bodies in the box to finish.  Offensively WWT is pretty vanilla….they play a lot of through balls and long balls, but they have a big athletic forward who can do damage when unattended. "

The MHSAA District 2-23 final will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday at Lakeview.
