Season Finale.

I’ve had a nervous stomach for the last two days and now I just feel down. We lost in the first round of the districts to a good Bloomfield Lahser team 1-0. But I was proud of the boys for their hard work and never say die play. We made it very tough for them, and I’m sure they’re counting their good fortunes.

It was a very strange way to end the season. The loss, of course, was tough, but the hardest part for me was seeing the faces of the seniors. I suppose it only really occurred to me at the end of the match that this was their last game as high school players. I perhaps didn’t focus on that enough and I apologise for not getting them all in the game. Things seemed to be running fairly smoothly and I left well enough alone. I wanted to win and I suppose I placed sentiment on the back burner.

I will try to post a season review (I’ll summarise, don’t worry) in the next couple of days.

Thank you to everyone that made my first year as varsity coach an enjoyable one. I wish I could have  given you a little more to cheer about. It wasn’t for a lack of trying.

Weekly Preview – 10/11/09

It was another tough week for the Huskies as they suffered their most lopsided defeat of the season 8-1, to MAC White Champs Romeo at home on Monday. The defeat left Lakeview in 5th place in the MAC White with a 3-6-2 record (4-10-2 overall). The team was able to bounce back from the Romeo defeat and put in a solid display on Wednesday evening, despite losing  1-0 to on a trip to Warren Cousino.

Lakeview starts the final week of the regular season with a trip to Sterling Heights High School on Wednesday. The Stallions are the champions of the MAC Blue Division with a 10-1-1 record (14-1-1 overall). It will be a tough test for the Huskies as they re now looking to prepare for the district tournament which will start on October 19th.

On Friday, October 16th,  the Huskies will  host Utica High for their final game of the regular season. Lakeview still holds a chance of finishing above Fraser in the division with a win in this contest. The Cheiftains took the first meeting between the two teams with a 3-1 win.

Progress Report

I’ve been a little slack about updating or publishing game reports, apologies. When we last spoke I was apologising for my red card in the game against Lakeshore. I was still boiling over the next day and let the boys know it at practice. I very rarely feel that making the players run the day after a poor performance solves very much, however, I felt I had to vent and show them how disappointed I was. So we, or they, ran for the first hour and fifteen minutes.
We talked as a team, I opened up the floor to anyone that wanted to say something. I gave them the opportunity to comment on my decisions, or to make suggestions as to how they think we can improve. Most of them were quiet, which I took to mean that I’m doing an awesome job! I’m joking of course. I knew most would be silent. I felt that after the Lakeshore performance we, as a team, had two choices. To either spiral down and mail in the season. Or, and I prefer this option, to take this as a wake up call. As something to kick us up the proverbial backside and get us moving.

Now, the results since then have been mixed (Beat Dakota, Lost to GPS and LCN), but I, as a coach, have been happy with the performances. We seem to have more grit and have  passed the ball with more purpose. We completely dominated GPS. In appalling weather conditions we limited them to one shot in the first half (a goal!). Even in the second half, when they had a gale force wind at their backs, they were still struggling to make any headway against us. But they just mention the scoreline at the end. It would be nice sometimes if the paper said: MAC WHITE, Lakeview 0 – 1 GPS. “But Lakeview were dominant and a much better team.”

Last night against LCN was a similar story with a worse outcome. I thought we were a better team in the first half, and for a large portion of the second half. But after the third goal went in we were domoralized. We made them look like superstars. To me, and as I stated in a previous post I’m probably not looking from an objective vantage point, we have gifted so many goals. The GPS goal was handed on a silver tray. At least 3 of the 4 against LCN were presented with shiny red bows!! We have some defensive frailities and lack a little hunger in the goal scoring department, but for the most part we are improving with each game. Although the results may not indicate said improvement, I honestly feel that we are becoming a better team.

Thank you for your continued support. I hope my next post will focus on dominance, both in the playing department and the goals department.

Weekly Preview – 9/27/09

After a win and a loss last week the Huskies look forward to three chances for victory this week with contests against Grosse Pointe South, L’anse Creuse North and Fraser.

On Monday the Blue Devils of Grosse Pointe South will make the trip north of 8 mile as the Huskies host this MAC Blue contest. GPS stands at 2-1-4 in the division tied with Lakeview (3-3-1) on points at 10. The first contest ended in a 1-1 draw. JV game time is 5:30 PM while the varsity kicks off at 7:00 PM.

Wednesday will see the Huskie traveling to L’anse Creuse North. Lakeview took all three points in the first meeting with a 2-1 win at home., but LCN stands with the exact same MAC Blue record as Lakeview at 3-3-1. JV game gets underway at 5:30 PM, varsity begins at 7:00 PM.

Finally on Friday, Lakeview will finish the week with a trip to the Fraser Ramblers. Fraser came to Lakeview and snuck away with a 2-1 win a couple of weeks ago, so the Huskies will be looking to even the score. Fraser stands at 2-3-2 in the MAC Blue. Varsity will play first at 4:00 PM while JV takes the field at 5:30 PM.
